Meet The Team
What is U CANN?
U CANN Youth Foundation is a private, non-profit, community based organization founded in 2016. The foundation is comprised of a loving collection of coaches, educators and parents working together to cultivate hard work and dedication in our young athletes that will translate into success both in sports and in life.
Our sports programs will teach the fundamentals of various sports and allow athletes to compete on a local and national scale. In addition to physical competition, each program will impart the values of sportsmanship, respect (for self and others), work ethic and responsibility. Giving back to the community is very important to us and by requiring each team/program to participate in local charitable events and community volunteering opportunities, we will teach the importance of community responsibility and humanity.
Times are difficult for adults and they are just as trying for our youth and adolescents. How do we teach our youth to cope with the challenges and pressures that are presented to them daily? The constant barrage of media that tells young adults how they should look and dress, how they should walk and talk, or how they should treat the "haves and have nots" adds to the innate burden to feel accepted and to fit in. We want to provide a productive alternative to the sexual content, violence, drugs and alcoholism that they are exposed to today.
There's plenty of research readily available that supports the use of extracurricular activities, especially those of physical nature, to help combat challenges such as social stigma, cyber bullying, depression and childhood obesity. We are here to help get our youth off the couch, away from the desk and away from mobile devices to engage in exercise and learn to lead healthy lifestyles.
Insecurity, low self-esteem, lack of confidence: these are crippling emotions that overwhelm our youth when it comes to coping with the challenges mentioned above and the myriads not listed here. To build self confidence and overcome low self esteem is to change how we feel emotionally about ourselves. To change our emotion requires changing our vision of success and the idea that we are not good enough. We are not just about sports, but we will use sports as a vehicle to teach the process of setting and achieving small goals. Team sports such as basketball and relays help build trust and acceptance. We believe that small successes will help transform feelings of inadequate-ness and insecurity into positive emotions of self-reliance and self-confidence. Hence our Motto: U CANN achieve if you believe...
Currently we offer two sports, track and basketball. In addition to offering other team sports, we will also introduce a mentoring program and hopefully a tutoring or continued education program.
Success stories can be found all over and mentors are just waiting to be realized. We would like to bring in people from various backgrounds and careers to share their experiences with our teams. For young athletes, what better way to be inspired than to hear from or engage with people that went through similar struggles or participated in sports and was able to appreciate some level of success as a result of their sacrifices, perseverance or focus? For adults, what better way to pay it forward than to reach back and positively impact a child's life and help steer them to their own success?
Many of our parents are educators. We think this is a fine opportunity to leverage their expertise to assist with educational needs outside of a school environment. Our practices may total 4-6 hours a week. This is plenty of time for an athlete to receive specific subject tutoring if he/she ever finds themselves in academic jeopardy or just need to know more about a particular subject. What about the non-participating siblings that are there on the sidelines during practice? There is plenty of online material and learning software that we can make available on a tablet that they can check out during practice. How about checking out a book to read as well?
The possibilities are endless if we continue to dream outside of the box and utilize each other as resources. Feel free to contact us if you have ideas or experience starting up similar programs.
The future of U CANN...
The purpose of U CANN...
Our core values include diversity, respect, trustworthiness, commitment, good sportsmanship and teamwork.
Work harder today for a stronger tomorrow!!!
Provide a safe and nourishing atmosphere where our youth can participate in various levels of competition and sports that encourage mental awareness, self-discipline, determination and endurance.
Through sports we intend to plant seeds in the minds of our youth that they are more than their surroundings or backgrounds. We will connect with parents to show our support; we are firm believers in the age old notion that it takes a community to raise a child. Our parents and coaches are unified in steering our young men and women away from life threatening obstacles such as violence, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. We will provide a foundation for our youth for competing in our society today, not just as athletes but as productive citizens of tomorrow. Not only will we encourage physical fitness, but we will also indorse healthy eating choices and promote healthy lifestyles. We will impart the importance of balance in education, personal development and community responsibility.
We assume a fundamental role in helping athletes develop and maintain positive character traits such as genuineness, pride, respect, courage, perseverance and poise. All participants will learn the importance of collaboration, camaraderie and social responsibility.
